In this lecture we first briefly summarise the various formulations of classical mechanics. In particular, we look at the need to use a vector potential to describe the magnetic part of the electromagnetic force we started to study last time around.

We show that the Lagrangian leads to the correct equations of motion and, using gauge invariance, we go on to calculate a simple case, leading to a derivation of a phenomenon called the Hall effect.
